Recreation Opportunities

In order to limit disturbance to wildlife and habitat, recreation opportunities and public access are concentrated around the Visitor Center.  As with all Preserves, decisions on public access are made with the best interest of the biological resources in mind.

In general, passive "nonconsumptive" recreational activities, such as bird watching, photography, nature study, hiking and paddling, are encouraged on the Preserve. A few specially designated areas have been set aside for limited hunting. Fishing is only allowed from a boat, in the river, and with the proper license.

Visitors are asked to start their experience at the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center

The Visitor Center is open and staffed by Volunteers on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.  July and August Visitor Center hours are 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. The Visitor Center features interpretive displays and interactive educational exhibits, as well as picnic tables and rest rooms.

From the Visitor Center visitors are welcome to tour the Cosumnes River Walk and Lost Slough Wetlands Walk on their own.  Other areas of the Preserve are not open to casual self-guided tours, in order to protect the habitat for its natural inhabitants. Please check our schedule for guided tours and volunteer work days you might be interested in.
