Educational Opportunities at the Cosumnes River PreserveCome Join Our Activities!
Teachers are required to attend a teacher workshop prior to scheduling a field trip including a stop at theVisitor Center. Visitor Center - The Visitor Center features hands-on exhibits, restrooms and picnic facilities for sixty students. Self-Guided Trails- Two trails are open to the public during daylight hours. Both trailheads are easily accessible from the Visitor Center or Franklin Blvd. The Lost Slough Wetland Boardwalk Trail is approximately 1-mile long and provides a good view of seasonal and permanent wetlands west of Franklin Blvd. The River Walk Nature Trail is a 3.3 mile loop that takes the visitors along a variety of different habitats. Both trails have numbered markers that correspond with an educational trail brochure that is available at the Visitor Center. Naturalist-guided River Walk tours are offered on some weekends (call in advance or see schedule for dates and times). Curriculum - A three part curriculum unit (activity packet) is available as a series or separately by grade level - grades K-3, grades 4-6, grades 7-12. The curriculum focuses on local environmental education. Each grade level packet includes classroom activities designed to accompany the fall and spring on-site trail activities. The curriculum was developed with local and state curriculum requirements in mind. The curriculum is available online or can be purchased for $10.00. If you'd like to purchase a copy, please send us a letter with your contact information and grade level, as well as, a check for $10.00 made out the Cosumnes River Preserve. Workshop - We offer Fall and Spring workshops for teachers and parents, attendance in which is mandatory prior to scheduling a field trip. If you would like to attend the next scheduled workshop, please click here to send an email to put you on the list. The Location of the workshop is the Cosumnes River Preserve Visitor Center at 13501 Franklin Boulevard, in Galt. The workshop will focus on preparing teachers and parents for an onsite visit to the Preserve. Information about the Preserve’s joint partnership, natural history, and habitats will be shared. Teachers and parents will also have the opportunity to conduct the hands-on activities included in the curriculum. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a sack lunch or dinner. To register for the workshop, please contact John Durand via email. Preparing
for a Field Trip Visit… Adult Leaders Educators are recommended to attain a ratio of one adult for every eight students. Chaperones should be oriented to the Preserve, via written materials, this web site, and/or visiting the Preserve. This really does make for a more enjoyable visit. Safety Educators must carry a first aid kit (not provided by the Cosumnes River Preserve) and all visitors should carry a personal supply of potable water on the trail.
